Working as a production designer has opened my eyes to the value of a skillfully cluttered space. Messes accompany the passage of time in ways difficult to manufacture. There’s no pattern to the contents of a coffee table or a neglected bedroom floor, yet you can’t merely toss a handful of objects onto a surface and call it authentic. No person (nor mess) is alike. Unless someone is painfully minimalist or rich, an uncluttered room screams “FAKE! FAKE! I’M A RUSE!”
Thus introduces the benefit of decor.
I’ve begun observing these spaces with newfound appreciation- each its own sociological microbiome. What better way to know someone than through their stuff?
